Carcinogenic Dust
The Simple Truth
While quarries are certainly vital for some construction projects, they leave a deep and lasting scar on the health of the people who work and live near them. Cancer, birth defects, and stunted mental development have all been historically observed when projects like this quarry are allowed to run rampant. It cannot be overstated the danger they present to the health of us and our children.
Rock quarries create microscopic dust through mining and blasting that can be impossible to see or detect until it's too late. This can be particularly dangerous when blasting silica, which can lead to silicosis -- an incurable and often deadly long-term lung disease common among quarry workers.
The Invisible Killer
- In a study, 98% of residents near a stone quarry were found to be exposed to carcinogenic dust even in the safety of their homes. source
- Outdoor air pollution was linked to 4.2 million premature deaths in 2019. source
- Old Hazeldell Quarry plans on mining for the next 50 years, potentially affecting generations of Oakridge residents.
Oakridge's future
Our town is at a critical junction. While offering short-term economic gains, the long-term cost to the health of us and our children is undeniable.
